A Word From the Producing Artistic Director

Chuck Tobin
Producing Artistic Director

Dear Theatergoer,

It’s been sixty years since Saint Michael’s Playhouse first opened its theater doors to the Greater Burlington community and now, with hundreds of productions and more than one million audience members later, Saint Michael’s Playhouse is bigger and stronger than ever! During the past four seasons, we’ve had an astounding fifty percent increase in attendance, with more than fifteen thousand audience members like you enjoying a performance at the Playhouse each season.

Our success depends on our unique strengths. We produce our New York-caliber productions right here in Vermont with professional actors, directors, and designers coming to us direct from the New York stage and other prestigious regional theater companies across the United States. We rehearse our shows and design and create all of our scenery, costumes and props in our very own facility with our company and crew of approximately eighty professional theater artists. Our shows are not touring productions making a one-night stop at the Playhouse, but full-scale theatrical productions that are custom-produced by us, precisely for your entertainment.

This year, your subscription to the Playhouse will bring you four fantastic productions that offer even more joy, music, laughter, and insight than ever before. Our 2009 season is comprised of the blockbuster, crowd-pleasing hits Dames at Sea, a tap dancing send-up of the 1930s Hollywood musicals; Talley's Folly, the Pulitzer Prize-winning romantic comedy set on the  Fourth of July; How the Other Half Loves, an ingenious, funny and brilliantly crafted British farce; and Breaking Up is Hard To Do, the irresistible new musical comedy featuring the hit songs of Neil Sedaka.

But what’s most remarkable about a subscription to the Playhouse this summer is that tickets to all four shows cost less than one single ticket to a Broadway show in New York. You get all the excitement of New York theater for a fraction of the cost!
