Saint Michael's Playhouse

Saint Michael's Playhouse produces professional theater in the The McCarthy Arts Center Theater on the campus of Saint Michael's College. The Playhouse which operates on an Equity CORST (Council of Resident Stock Theaters) Contract has been producing professional theater since 1947.  McCarthy Arts Center has been the home of Saint Michael's Playhouse since it was was built in 1975.  The facility, which was partially renovated in 2000, also houses a Recital Hall and Art Gallery. The theater has a proscenium stage with a partial thrust and has a total seating capacity of 366.

Dimensions

Stage is 3’-5 Ό” off of the house floor

Proscenium arch is        17'-10" SR high

Traps

There are six removable trap doors on stage. 

The total size of the traps area is 9’-6” x 24’-5” 

They are all large and unwieldy:  approximately 4’-9” wide and 8’-1 5/8” long. 

Traps are supported on two permanent wooden members running US/DS and three smaller removable joists running SL/SR

These traps have been removed all at once only one time (spring 2002).  They are large, heavy and awkward—other than that, they’re great.

Orchestra Pit

The orchestra pit is movable with four fixed stop points. 
(It may be stopped at any point along the way)

- stage level

- house level (-3’-5 Ό”)

- midway down from house to greenroom (-7’-1 3/8”)

- greenroom floor (-12’-1”)

Pit is curved with a radius of 33’-6”

Pit is 8’-10” wide

The pit has built-in edison floor plugs

Loading Dock
 

  • Dock has room for a single truck up to full trailer size. 
  • There is no awning or shelter outside on the dock.
  • Dock height is 3’-1”
  • Loading dock chamber allows for materials to be loaded into the building all material  must turn 90o to move into the studio or the stage
  • Dock door is a garage-style door: 9’-11”h x 9’-10”w
  • Door to studio: 15’-4”h x 10’-4”w (broken fold out door)
  • Door to stage:  15’-10 ½”h x 12’-0”w (rollup steel door)
  • There are no house ramps.

 

Flys

The grid is 46’-6” off of stage floor and reachable by narrow, steep switchback steps UL

There are 30 line sets to the fly system, spread out over 25’-0” 

Out trim is 45’-0”; In trim varies
